The Alexander Technique teaches the skilful "use of the self": how we move, how we breathe, how we learn, how we organise our awareness and focus of attention and, above all, how we choose our reactions in increasingly demanding situations.

It follows therefore that the Alexander Technique can have a positive effect on a wide range of stresses and ailments, including back, neck or shoulder pain and other muscular/skeletal problems, headaches, RSI, breathing difficulties, sports and performance strain, stress related conditions, anxiety and depression; as well as enhancing performance, improving vitality and general wellbeing.

A Technique for Living and a Technique for Life

There have been many words written about the Alexander Technique, but most people (including me when I first started years ago) find that these only really make sense when they experience it! But in essence, the Alexander Technique is a technique that teaches us how to use our body in a more efficient and healthier way. It is taught individually and anyone can learn it.

The Alexander Technique is a method of mental and physical re-education. It is concerned with thinking as well as activity, and it teaches us how to ‘use’ ourselves to best advantage in all our daily activity. It is widely recognised as an effective means of alleviating or preventing back and other muscular-skeletal pain and many other disorders.

So often we build up unnecessary habits of muscular tension over the years. We are usually unaware of these until they cause us pain and discomfort, but every day they are stopping us moving in an effortless and dynamic way and fulfilling our true potential. The Alexander Technique helps us recognise and prevent these unnecessary tensions.

We learn to stand easily at our full height. This leads to good posture, freedom of movement, easy breathing, confidence and general well-being. And when this happens we find that our back pain, neck pain, general stiffness and other disorders are relieved. It helps us to feel calmer and think more clearly.

How do you Learn the Alexander Technique?

Alexander Technique Lessons

You can learn the Alexander Technique through one-to-one lessons with me at my practice in Sunningdale, Berkshire.  (I also teach one day a week in Bromyard, Herefordshire). Learning the Technique involves changing long-standing habits of movement, and relies on your active participation.

The Technique involves no specific exercises, requires no special equipment, and can be practised wherever you are.  It is suitable for people of all ages and levels of physical mobility.

Alexander Technique Semi-Supine

Through experience and observation you gain increased awareness, enabling you to change long-standing habits and to function more efficiently. In time you will be able to use your new understanding and skill in more complex and demanding activities; you can bring the awareness and poise of the Technique to anything you do.

The number of lessons you take will depend on your particular needs and goals, but regular lessons, at least at the beginning, are important.  Many people start with two a week, but this is not always practical for everyone and I will discuss your individual situation and needs with you.

One Lesson in a week £45.00

Two Lessons in a week £80.00

Appointments are available Monday, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays.
Some early evening and Saturday appointments can be made. 

All lessons are 45 minutes.

Your initial lesson gives you the opportunity to discuss your situation, and most importantly to experience the Technique and discover how it might help you.

Anyone who has suffered chronic back pain knows how depressing it can be over the years, with very little long term respite from traditional medicine and therapeutic methods. It seems obvious now that the way I move and think and 'use' myself would be the key to improvement, but one clearly needs to have the experience and be 'shown the way', so to speak. My back feels looser, almost always pain-free, I feel taller, more balanced and co-ordinated.
